For a blog go for blogspot or wordpress. If so you will have url like yourname.blogspot.com
Now you can go for a free co.cc domain or a cheap .info domain.
For more professional solutions try reliable hosting companies, they start from $2.95
per month and they offer a free .com domain

You can’t have your site’s name without the webhost’s name on it if your subscription is free.

What I suggest is to place your blog on a webhost (WordPress is my personal choice; Blogspot if you’re a beginner) and go to http://www.dot.tk/ and have your original (ugly) URL covered with http://www.thenameofyoursite.tk/.
